Smartwool – a leading American brand famous for its products made from merino wool: stylish clothing, thermal underwear, technological socks for active sports and the city, and accessories.
“GO FAR, FEEL GOOD”
The Smartwool philosophy is based on three principles:
Comfort
”FEEL GOOD”
One of the benefits of merino wool is its comfort. But how we design our clothes or socks can affect how you feel. We use an inside-out design philosophy to make sure our clothes are as comfortable as possible. The entire Midlayers category is made from 100% merino wool. In the underwear, all seams are flat-locked to prevent chafing and irritation. In the socks, the main focus is comfort during any activity.
Fashion
Comfort and practicality.
You will want to wear our clothes every day. They will become your favorite wardrobe item, both for outdoor activities and for everyday use.
Durability
”GO FAR”
Merino wool is a strong natural fiber, but over time it wears out and breaks down. We design and manufacture our products to last. With our Indestructawool technology, which we use in our socks, we have achieved 30% more wear resistance. With the same goal in our clothing, we have used Core Spun technology, which has increased the wear resistance of our lightweight clothing without sacrificing comfort. So, your favorite merino items will last you even longer.
HISTORY
It all started in 1994 with an idea. With the idea of comfort. A couple of ski instructors, Peter and Patty Duke from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, spent most of their time on the snowy slopes in all kinds of weather. They knew the value of comfort, warm and dry feet like no other. This prompted them to make a bold decision to start their own business and create ski socks that would warm well in cold weather and keep their feet dry and warm throughout the day, absorbing and removing excess moisture from the skin. At the same time, the product had to soften the layer between the foot and the hard walls of ski boots, be thin enough not to bunch up, not to slip, and not to rub calluses, and most importantly - to be pleasant to the body. The ideal material that could cope with such a task was merino sheep wool. This is how a new brand of ski socks made of "smart wool" appeared - Smartwool.
In 1995, the company first entered the large market with its product and became the first company in the United States to start producing high-tech ski socks made of merino wool. Later, Smartwool expanded its production and launched socks OutDoor, Hike, Trekking, Hunting & Fishing, Snowboarding, Running, Cycling and Lifestyle series.
At that time, leading manufacturers of socks and outdoor clothing preferred to manufacture from synthetic materials. Wool was associated with some kind of coarse, untechnological material, and was considered impractical. Smartwool was able to prove the opposite and led a revolution in the field of manufacturing things from merino wool. Having devoted a lot of time to the search for new methods of processing raw materials and improving yarn manufacturing technologies, Smartwool achieves high results in production.
In 1999, Smartwool first launched its clothing production, the main material in the manufacture of which was also merino wool.
This is how the Merino 150, Merino 195, and Merino 250 series were born.
Later, the PhD/Sport clothing series was developed, using a combination of wool and synthetic fibers.
Today, Smartwool is a subsidiary of VF Corporation.
RAW MATERIALS
The main suppliers of raw materials for Smartwool are farms in New Zealand, where a large number of Merino sheep are bred. This breed of sheep was imported there from Spain a long time ago. In the high-altitude New Zealand pastures, the sheep were able to adapt to difficult weather conditions. Their fur protects them and allows them to easily endure both hot, humid summers and harsh, cold winters. This is its uniqueness. Merinos are fine-fleece, differing from other breeds of sheep in the high quality of their wool, namely combed wool, worsted, which consists of thin, soft fibers (15-25 microns), which are characterized by high flexibility and strength.
In 2010, Smartwool signed a contract to supply merino wool with the New Zealand Merino Company. This agreement is still in effect today.
ZQ Merino & SMARTWOOL
In 2005, Smartwool reviewed its cooperation with wool suppliers, and put forward a major requirement, according to which farms must abandon the practice of mulesing (removing strips of skin around the buttocks of sheep to prevent parasitic disease). This is inhumane towards animals.
Smartwool then began working with ZQ Merino. The company regulates relations between wool suppliers and purchasing companies, which adhere to established rules in order to achieve the following goals: ensure humane treatment of sheep (in the process of growing and keeping, feeding and shearing), ensure fair treatment of wool producers, sound business rules, minimize the impact of farms on the environment, promote environmental protection.
Thanks to this, healthy sheep produce good wool that meets the required certification, and we receive high-quality raw materials from which we manufacture our products for you to enjoy in comfort. In this way, the activity and all areas of production (from the source of raw materials to the end consumer) are protected and everyone is satisfied with the result of such cooperation.
