The company's history began in 1933 in Sweden, where brothers Björn Alvar and Arvid Kjælström invented the first liquid-filled compass. Not only was it the first such compass, but it also set the global standard for how navigation works today.
Later, in 1935, the first Zeiler headlamp was released, and the Silva brand was born. The company continues to develop products for people who spend a lot of time outdoors. With Silva products, you can go anywhere, at any time of day and in any weather conditions.
1933 – the beginning
Björn Alvar and Arvid Kjælström invented the world's first liquid-filled compass. At the time, compasses did not have stabilizing mechanisms to prevent the needle from swinging. Their invention made it easier and faster to use a compass.
The protractor scale on the flask allowed users to determine direction more accurately on maps, and the needle stabilized in the compass fluid within four seconds, instead of the 30 seconds of older compasses.
1935 – the first headlamp
Although headlamps had been around since the early 1900s (usually used by miners who attached the lights to their caps), they weren't very powerful. After 12 hours of use, the output of the lamps would drop to 5 lumens. They also needed to be checked and repaired daily.
To expand the business, the company decided to start producing its own headlamps. The first headlamp was called Zeiler.
During this period, the Silva brand was born.
Over time, Silva developed and improved its products, creating new and new models of compasses and headlamps.
1939 – The first mirror compass. This allowed the user to see the direction of both the object and the compass bulb at the same time. When the compass dial and the reference point were aligned, the user could determine the most accurate bearings.
1960 – The first wrist compass, the Globe Trotter, was introduced. It had an aluminum body and a white and red arrow with a luminous north mark. The leather strap was very long and was intended to be worn over mountaineering clothing.
1981 – The first marine electronic navigation device was released.
1982 – the world's first portable GPS with a built-in digital compass. It had several modes, such as determining the current position, navigating in a given direction, saving waypoints, etc. Thanks to the built-in antenna and the sensitivity of the receiver, it could be used in the most difficult circumstances.
2008 - Intelligent Light Technology. Silva developed a dual-beam light technology that adapts to how the human eye works in the dark. Called Intelligent Light, this technology is still used in all Silva headlamps.
2015 – Flow Light. Silva continued to improve light by introducing the Flow Light feature, which allowed you to smoothly adjust the light pattern for different activities by simply tilting the headlamp up or down.
2016 - released two iconic compass models, Ranger and Expedition, with a global needle. This allowed the compass to be used anywhere in the world.
2020 - Trail Runner Free features a new technology in which the power cord is integrated into the strap. This, combined with soft textile details, provides unique comfort for all runners. The innovative design received the most prestigious ISPO Awards 2020.
2021 – Arc Jet and Spike Jet series of compasses. This is a giant leap into the future. Developed together with the world's leading orienteers. Silva has added unique features to these compasses that will help you reach your destination first.
Working closely with athletes, Silva sets new standards among orienteers, trail runners and skiers.
Since 2022, SMG has been the official distributor of the Silva brand in Ukraine.
